If you don’t already know me, my name is Hannah, and I am messy. I can be loud, goofy, uber-sarcastic, I love to laugh, and sometimes I’m oblivious to what is going on around me, but through the course of my life, I have come to the realization that I am God’s mess. He made me like this, so he has to deal with me and my quirks. ;)
Life can be hard sometimes. We all know that it affects us in different ways at different points in our lives, but some days, life just sucks. CORRECTION: life is a gift! I have discovered that life needs to be treated as a gift, and this is why…
For me, I have not been personally affected by abortion. I’ve never had one and I don’t know that any of my extended family has either. Since I have not been affected by abortion in my life, I wondered if I had any information that would be worth sharing, and the question started coming to the forefront of my mind: “I am pro-life, but why do I care so much?” As I looked back at instances in my life, I was raised with good morals, and my parents instilled in me the difference between wrong and right and where to draw the line. But that wasn’t really when I truly started valuing the gift of life.
A few years ago I ran across a video that was put together by a former abortionist, Dr. Anthony Levantino, who had performed more than 1300 abortions, and he explained the process of a second trimester abortion, and how it works (view the video above). That was literally the longest four minute video I have ever watched in my life. The abortionist drains the amniotic fluid and takes a clamping tool and grabs a hold of an arm, or leg, and that tool locks onto the limb and doesn’t let go. The abortionist then tears the limbs away from the rest of the body and crushes the skull, leaving pieces of mangled flesh behind. Thinking about this breaks my heart. Those children never had a chance to live. I don’t know about you, but that sounds a whole lot like murder to me.
Since Roe v Wade, I have seen our culture become corrupted by the lack of respect for human life. If you look at the example of Saint Gianna Molla, she gave her life to save the life of her unborn baby. Woah. In today’s society, that’s almost unheard of. The sacredness of life is not seen as a miracle, but it is viewed only in the way people want to view it. For example, if you are a newlywed couple and found out that you were expecting, you would be overjoyed, but if you are a rape victim, that life that is inside this women is somehow not as important as the first one. A life is a life, and you can’t change that.
This being said, sometimes we get lost in what the world says, and we take our everyday life for granted. I know that there have been days when I joke around and say “my life sucks, or kill me, I have an exam in 10 minutes that I haven’t studied for.” (true story) In these instances, we undermine God, who is the author of life. He created us with all our quirks, and His creation is beautiful. He created you from the hairs on your head to the cells on your pinky finger. He loves you and created you to be just as he wants you. God walks with us every day. He hears what we say and sees how we act. I can just imagine, when we go around and say things like “kill me” or “life sucks,” His heart breaks a little bit each time, because He made you. You are a gift and if you haven’t heard it from anyone recently, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL! You are one of God’s most prized masterpieces, and I beg you to recognize your worth and put on the armor of God, because when we don’t, we will be thrown into battle with a relentless enemy.
Since Satan has figured out that he can’t get at God, he goes for His children here on earth- that’s us. We have heard over and over that the devil twists the truth because we as humans would recognize his lie if it was obvious. Abortion is twisted by the devil (who is super annoying) to make it seem okay. That is why there is so much controversy about it. When you talk about the situations when either the mom or baby lives, or when the baby will not live because of a medical abnormality, the lines between what is wrong and right are blurred. I have definitely seen in my life that the closer we draw to God, the sneaker the devil has to be to get to us.
A few years ago I attended a leadership conference, and on the last day, when we were getting ready to go home, the speaker brought out a bell onto the stage. He showed us how easy it is to ring the bell, and what that means in terms of the Navy SEAL’s and their training. The bell represents failure. All someone has to do when they are too tired to continue training is ring the bell. They go through some of the most extreme training scenarios, and at those times where it was hard and all someone wants to do is give up, they don’t go the easy way and ring the bell to give up. Instead, they rely on each other’s strength to carry them along the way to success. He related this to our spiritual battle with the devil. Ephesians 6:10-18 says “Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the word of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication."
I know that right now there may not seem like there is much hope, but I know from personal experience that God makes beauty from our mess. Our world is messy right now, and we have to have faith that God will come and make it into something beautiful, and I truly believe that if we let Him take over, He will do wonderful things in our lives. In the meantime, put on the armor of God and prepare for battle, because we face an enemy who will stop at nothing to keep us from Christ.
